[Editor's Comment: I wish I were able to travel and be there with you all. Melvine and I, along with Greg and Stephanie, attended Muse Memorial when I was president of Southwestern College. Melvine sang in the choir as well as solos. In addition, Melvine taught a Sunday school class of young adults. I attended the class taught by Scott Muse. Greg and Stephanie enjoyed sitting in the balcony. Those were wonderful days of worship and preaching of the Gospel. Bill Anderson knew how to flow in the Spirit and we had great altar services. I remember praying in the altar area with other fellow believers in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit was real and His manifest presence was always there. I remember a revival with Bishop Jesse Winley from New York City. I think the revival lasted 5 weeks. He was a great preacher. I took him out to lunch one day and enjoyed talking with this Godly man. He was an encouragement to me and blessed me.
I remember that former presidents, Dr. R. O. Corvin and his wife, and Dr. W. R. Corvin and his wife worshiped there with Melvine and me. I am glad I honored both men. I made an office available for Dr. W. R. Corvin to correspond with his many friends who loved and supported Southwestern College. I thank God for the men who preceded me, and those who followed. Dr. Leroy Baker worked closely with Bishop Leon O. Stewart who made it possible for the college to be saved and moved to the Bethany campus where our headquarters is located. I applaud both men, as well as those who followed Dr. Baker.
It is a joy to stand with and support Dr. Tom Murray. He and I worked together when I was president. Tom was the Vice President for Development. He helped me greatly in raising money for the college. That is a major role for college presidents to raise money and help recruit new students, as well as bless current students.
During my presidency we had a large number of Iranian students who came to Southwestern College for our superior math and science courses that helped prepare these Iranian students to get into the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. They were interested in preparing for the oil industry.
In order to make sure that our students could attend chapel, I made an executive decision to move the chapel services to the gymnasium for mandatory attendents for all students, over a thousand. I appointed John Parker to be in charge. He got the best pastors, preachers, evangelists, missionaries, and laymen to speak in those services. We closed down all offices of the college with the exception of the college telephone operators.
God gave me opportunity to speak to several Iranian students about Jesus Christ, as well as a number of American students. It was a joy to see God provide funding for the students with limited or virtually no money. And God did provide.
I remember one student who came to see me who needed $200 to register. I asked him to kneel with me in my office and pray for God to supply that need. In the mail the next day was a letter from a retired Air Force colonel and his wife I knew from my ministry at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. They wrote, "We were thinking of you and Melvine today and praying for you and the college. The Lord impressed us to send a check for $200 to help a student in need." I sent word for this student to come to my office. I shared with him the letter and the check. We both lifted our hands in praise to God for His favor in answering our prayers. I took him to see Dan T. Muse, Jr. to give him the check for this student and requested that he have him enrolled in classes.
It is so important for us to support our colleges, Holmes Bible College, Emmanuel College, Southwestern Christian University, and Advantage College. I know personally all of the presidents: D. Chris Thompson, Ron White, Tom Murray, and Bill Terry. I praise God for each one of them. They need our love, prayer and financial support.]
